Christian Vogt: A Strange Style of Portrait

Christian Vogt, a Swiss photographer known for his portraits catches my attention with rather strange images. The way he captures the human form rather than the human being itself is something very unique that I haven't seen before. His images sometimes come across as very surreal, and somewhat outrageous, or even just outright strange.

This image features a man holding a rock to his face, blocking the viewer from seeing the model. The positioning and angle of the arms looks like a natural rock formation if you aren't paying attention, which I think was Vogt's intent. He turns the human body into shapes, and things by obstructing the familiar parts, making the viewer disassociate the body as a person. Compositionally the image is very nice. The slight off centered positioning adds a bit of drama to the shot, and the perfect timing of the cloud, similarly shaped to the rock in the top left corner really helps fill the frame.

This next picture features a portrait with hands. As we've said before, hands are considered a portrait. They have personality, and can make expressions of their own. There's a certain body language to the positioning of hands in an image. These hands look uncomfortable. The ring finger looks like a strange creature with funny looking legs the way the other fingers are around it. I think you can see it if you squint. The composition is very dramatic here. Direct lighting creates very harsh shadows, both on the subject itself, as well as on the background.

This last image stumps me... is it a double exposure? How was the body cut out of the dress without losing the shape of the body? It's really an awesome image. The positioning of the body in the nearly negative space of the building frames it nicely, and the shadow is framed by the lighting. I'd imagine there was a person in the dress, but without photoshop I'm really just unsure how he did this. Probably some unimaginable dark room magic that I don't know how to do.
